Well, That Certainly Took A Long Time

Huzzah! Hooray! Holy Hannah, I'm finally done!

After over five months, I at long last have finished knitting my Doctor Who scarf.

Take a gander:

The Doctor Is In by Cori 2011.

It is taller than I am!

My neck will never get cold in the winter again!

Pattern: Season 12.5 in Vanna's Choice Yarn by Tara Wheeler
Yarn: Lion Brand Vanna's Choice in Beige (2), Olive (1), Charcoal (1), Brick (1), Toffee (1), Burgundy (1), and Mustard (1)
Needles: Size 9 Straights

This pattern is based on the scarf that Tom Baker wore as the Doctor in the Doctor Who episodes "The Ark in Space," "Genesis of the Daleks," and "Revenge of the Cybermen." The scarf was a key feature of the fourth Doctor's costume and is recognizable by Who fans worldwide. It underwent many alterations over Baker's tenure in the role, but I went with this one because a) the pattern was specifically designed for an acrylic yarn that I am familiar with and enjoy using, and b) as far as I can tell this was based on the first iteration of the scarf.

While I love Vanna's Choice, I definitely learned that I prefer knitting in natural fibers as opposed to acrylic. I suddenly understand why knitters are so, um, persnickety about their yarn's fiber content. Acrylic is great for crocheting (especially blankets), but for knitting the more pricey stuff is much nicer to work with. I think that one day several years from now, when I have forgotten how insane this project was, I would like to try again in a more upscale yarn. I figure this will be shortly after my daughter confiscates this first version for her very own (which she has already been attempting the entire time I was making it). I plan to get plenty enjoyment out of the scarf myself first though. I am almost looking forward to cold weather again. Almost.

Next up I have a few projects in the queue. I am definitely going to be juggling more than one project at a time. I have a baby blanket and (as yet undetermined) toy to make, as well as a sweater for a crochet-along.

Never a dull moment, eh? Oh well. I'm not really sure I would have it any other way.

  3. I wish you luck! I don't know why knitted scarves are so daunting, they should be so simple, but daunting they are. Just keep at it (even if you have to put it down every once and a while to work on something else). You'll get it done and it will be awesome, I am sure!
